Something's Sketchy Around Here...
If Someone Gives You Money for a Pen, Does It Then Become a Pen-Sell?
Back in 2020, when COVID was ramping up and people were staying in, one of our friends, who enjoyed painting, came up with an idea to highlight everyone’s artistic side. She created a Facebook group where we would come up with a theme for the week and then post our artistic versions of that theme. It didn’t matter if it was painting, drawing, sculpting, or whatever, we would give our interpretation of the weekly theme using our chosen medium.
I was excited because I spent a lot of my childhood drawing and, while I don’t do much of it these days (the story of my life), I figured it would be the best and easiest outlet for me to express myself. Unfortunately, due to life and work commitments, I wasn’t able to keep going with the group, but thought I’d post some of my “not bad” (if I do say so myself) offerings.
From the week where the theme was “Colorful fish”:
From “Penguin” week (with apologies to Bruce Timm) :
When the theme was “The Desert”:
“Seagull” week:
This one isn’t from the FB group, but from when my wife asked me to draw The Grinch for a Christmas sign she was making for work. I’m pretty sure it was from 2020 as well, though it might be from last year. Either way, you still wouldn’t want to touch him with a “thirty-nine-and-a-half-foot” pole!
Please don’t take this post as me saying “Hey, look! I’m an artist!” because I’m not (I still waffle on calling myself a ‘writer’) and I realize that. I still enjoy sketching/drawing when the rare mood strikes, unfortunately, it’s very rare these days. As I’ve mentioned before, being a cartoonist was something I’ve always wanted to be, but it wasn’t the path I followed. On the flip side, though, I’m not saying it’s too late either because, in my view, it’s never too late to follow a passion. Who knows what the future holds in store?
Do you enjoy drawing, painting, sculpting, or any other artistic outlet?
Let me know down below!
Until next time—
Great post - really like your drawings! I joined a similar club at my last school- the Sketchbook Circle. Each week a different theme that you could illustrate however you wished and then the book would get passed onto someone else with the end goal that you’d get your original one back with other people’s work, too. It was fun - though I often found myself doing my ‘homework’ the night before it was due! I think you should include a sketch in your letters - that would be a great addition!
It sounds like we had similar passions. For many years, I pursued art and found a great community on Instagram. I wanted to be a cartoonist or comic artist. I did pretty well, but it never really connected. It was also around the time that Instagram was really tanking in terms of it's direction and support of non-video content. Alas, here I am on Substack and loving writing 😁 I second the notion about adding some sketches to your posts. If you enjoy it, I say go for it!
